A student of mine requested a couple of transcriptions from Jalen Ngonda’s album recently, and I’m glad they did. Jalen is signed to Daptones Records, so although it was released in 2023, it sounds like it could conceivably have been recorded anytime from about 1962 onwards.
Vincent Chiarito is the original bassist, having co-written the majority of the album too. The bassline is full of Jamerson-esque vocabulary. Chromatic passing tones, 16th note syncopation, and all played on what sounds like a P bass with foam & flats.
Fortunately, he repeats phrases and rhythms a little more readily than peak Jamerson, so I was able to sightread it relatively easily. I’m a big fan of the blues scale lick in the chorus!
