I was saddened to hear the news of Derrick McIntyre’s passing a few weeks ago. It made me consider just how formative the Jamiroquai album Dynamite was for me.
At the time of recording, the band didn’t have a permanent bassist, so they enlisted a handful of top UK session players. Bass credits include Randy Hope-Taylor, Alex Meadows, and Derrick McIntyre, who played on the majority of the album.
As a 17-year-old, hearing the incredible grooves, tone and fills, along with crystal clear production, was inspiring. On top of that, ‘Time Won’t Wait’ is yet another in a long list of songs that made me want a Stingray!
This playalong is more-or-less a note-for-note performance, with the exception of some added noodling in the breakdown just before the outro, and a small moment in the outro itself where I completely misread my own transcription. It had been a long day, and I thought the overall performance was strong enough without needing to be totally accurate! Maybe you can spot the exact point it happens based solely off my facial expression.
As always, the transcription is available in tab and notation:

RIP Derrick McIntyre.
